Early oil for The Valley

The Valley plays host to a cracking Saturday meeting, with the Group 2 McEwen Stakes and Group 2 Feehan Stakes highlighting the action.

The track is currently rated a Good 4, but there is a huge watch on the weather.

A big downpour is headed for Melbourne on Friday afternoon going into Saturday morning, however how much falls on the track is up for debate.

A Soft 7 by race day looks an accurate prediction.

The rail is situated in the true the entire circuit, at this set-up with the wet track, expect horses to be better suited off the fence.

Moonee Valley Race 5 Tip #3 Portland Sky $2.90

The first of the feature races here is the McEwen Stakes, and I'm siding with the resuming Group 1 winner Portland Sky.

He managed to win the Oakleigh Plate last prep, and then ran second to a superstar in Masked Crusader here at The Valley in the William Reid Stakes

It looks as though he hasn't missed a beat coming into this prep, with his jump outs leading in very strong and indicating he's up to the mark.

There looks to be a lot of speed on paper here and from the widest draw, I dare say they won't be pushing on to contest the lead. I suspect they'll opt for a spot behind the speed instead.

His best runs have come when dictating out in front, but the few occasions he hasn't led have been very unlucky.

He was on the worst part of the track when finishing midfield behind September Run at Flemington two preps back. In the run prior to that, he sat on the fence and got boxed in behind Muntaseera with no luck.

If they elect to sit midfield here out wide, that will be the best position in running and allow him to find the best part of the track as well.

He won a Group 3 at this track on a Soft 7, and recent jump outs on heavy tracks prove his ability to handle a rain impacted surface.

The price is a touch skinny at the moment and anything around the $3.30 mark would be a good bet.

Portland Sky

Moonee Valley Race 7 Tip #10 Riddle Me That $12.00

This looks an extremely competitive inaugural running of the Chautauqua Stakes, with the current market having a $5.50 favourite.

At a double figure quote, the resuming Riddle Me That is good value here over the 1200m.

His jump outs leading into this prep have been very strong. He won the first one over 700m and then closed off well under no riding in his second hit-out over 800m.

He looks to have returned in very good order, and has a very promising first up record of 5:2-1-0 to boot.

Last prep when first-up, he was given an unusually quiet ride at this track and trip, before flying home to grab 2nd behind Ancestry who controlled from the front.

He went on to finish just behind Mr Quickie and Still A Star in subsequent starts, and that form definitely reads well enough for this race.

Look for him to be afforded a very good run near the speed from barrier 4, and he's proven to handle wet tracks with a win and two placings from five starts on soft going previously.

A lot of the main market chances are drawn extremely wide or on the fence, and those runners will need luck from both positions to be winning.

The strong jump outs, combined with his natural ability and map in running, has him marked a $6 chance on my prices.

Looks a great each way bet.
