The 2014 Lexus Stakes is a Group 3 race which is held on Victoria Derby Day, arguably the best day of racing on the Australian racing calendar. The day features a string of Group races including the Mackinnon Stakes, Coolmore Stud Sakes and the Myer Classic. Formerly known as the Saab Quality the Lexus Stakes is held at Flemington Racecourse over 2,500 metres and this year falls on November 1st. It is a handicap race and is open to horses four years old and above with $250,000 in prize money on offer.
The winner of the Lexus Stakes gains exemption from any ballots into the Melbourne Cup run three days later. The last horse to win the Lexus Stakes - Melbourne Cup double was Skocking back in 2009.
Last year UK stayer Ruscello won the race. Connections and trainer Ed Walker was unsure whether they should enter him into the Cup as they felt that it may be too much for him at his age. Three days later their concerns were shown to be true when he ran second last in the Cup 56 lengths from the winner Fiorente. The other two place getters Let's Make a Deal and Araldo did not gain entry into the Cup. Fourth place getter Ethiopia was the only other horse to start in the Cup and ran a very smart race falling just outside the place getters in seventh place, seven lengths from Fiorente.
