About Doomben Racecourse
Located six kilometres north west of Brisbane's CBD in the suburb of Ascot, Doomben Racecourse was opened in 1933, and is within spitting distance of Brisbane's second premier racecourse Eagle Farm. Like its racecourse neighbour, Doomben was turned into a military home for Allied troops during World War Two, before being reopened in 1946.
Before the winter carnival reaches its zenith at Eagle Farm, there is an impressive list of races to get through at Doomben in May. These are highlighted by Doomben's two Group One races, the Doomben Cup and the Doomben 10,000. Run over 2,200 the Doomben cup is unique in that it can be won by stayers as well as middle distance runners. However, the Doomben 10,000 is purely for sprinters, and a race that top Australian short distance gallopers look to target at least once in their careers.
Doomben is quite a small track, with a circumference of only 1,715 metres, and a relatively short winning straight of 350 metres. The racetrack's three chutes at 1,350, 1,650 and 2,200 metres sees odd distances being run at Doomben, that won't be found at many other racecourses in the country.
