Newcastle hosts a strong card of racing today, with 8 races set for decision.

The harbour city has proven once again that it's the best draining track in NSW, after coming up a Good 4 this morning.

The rail is out 6m but given the width of the track, all participants should get their chance.

From the stewards

Miss Canada in Race 1 is the one that stands out for me in the steward's report.

Last start at Rosehill, she failed to handle the heavy conditions and was the victim of a torrid run.

She was forced to settle towards the rear and when making her run, copped some interference at the 350m mark.

She was found to have a small cut to the near fore coronet, but no other abnormalities were apparent.

Expect a much better performance in this easier company.

Jockey to follow

Brenton Avdulla is the standout jockey riding at Newcastle today.

In the past 12 months, the gun jockey has ridden here 39 times for 9 wins, at a 25% strike rate.

Avdulla has 5 rides today, with his best chance coming in race 2 on Zarzou.

Newcastle Race 8 Tip #7 Hubble $7.50 each way

The Star Witness gelding looks primed to give a good showing here, following a last start minor placing.

He went down in a three way go at Hawkesbury over this distance, but could have possibly won had he not laid in over the concluding stages.

Coming into this clash fourth-up will have him primed and ready to tackle the 1500m here at Newcastle.

The drying track will play into his hands and the addition of Stacey Metcalfe who claims 3kg, is a plus.

Stepping back from a Class 2 to a Class 1 is ideal and despite drawing poorly, Metcalfe can push forward early to sit mid-field. She won't want to be too far from the main two in the market, as they will be on-pace.

Regardless, the gelding is a brilliant each way play and with even luck she will be right there in the finish.
