Best plays on Day 1 of The Championships
Day 1 of The Championships has no fewer than four Group 1 races and is well supported by a number of high quality stakes level events.
The weather and rain-affected surface will of course play its part and if more rain was to come, expect the wide draws to be an advantage late in the day.
Many leading hopes came via hard runs on a testing Rosehill surface in past weeks. The jury is still out as to whether this will benefit or detract from their performances this week.
Watch early racing to identify any fast lanes and monitor the condition of the inside section.
Race 2 Carbine Club Stakes (Group 3 3yo SW+P) 1600m
The speed only looks slow and they are a big chance of crawling throughout here, with those racing forward to hold an advantage.
It's hard to go past
Ringerdingding (1) in this, however he is getting down to poison odds at the current $2.50. He goes on top, but I'm not sure the price is right.
Dealmaker (3) can improve significantly with the big drop in grade. He has competed well at Group 1 level this prep and is sure to run a big race against the easier class.
I love backing John Sargent trained horses as he is a genuine horseman and has rank outsider
Home Made (8) engaged here at $91.
That price looks well overs on a testing track and is worth having a peanut each-way.
Ranier (6) who has a touch of class and should take up one of the more favoured forward positions.
Best Racing Tips
1 st Ringerdingding
2 nd Dealmaker
3 rd Home Made
4 th Ranier
Race 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (Group 3 3yo Fillies Quality) 2000m
The girls should roll along at only a moderate tempo in this event, with
Pressure (16) and Amangirl (19) to work across from the deep.
Amangirl has been backed off the map in early betting markets ($3.10 to $2.60) and appears to take control after crossing them all.
The on-speed types look to hold an advantage and
Princess Jenni (4) is one that could be ridden more forward, considering the good draw and lack of tempo elsewhere.
She was excellent winning the Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley last start.
Welsh Legend (5) also gets speed map favours from the good draw (gate 5) and should receive the dream run just in behind the leaders. The current $18 looks value.
Another that appears big overs at $34 is
Lady Of Shallot (8), who could improve sharply now up to 2000m.
Best Racing Tips
1 st Princess Jenni
2 nd Amangirl
3 rd Welsh Legend
4 th Lady Of Shallot
Race 4 Country Championship Final (Restricted SW) 1400m
Expect them to run along at a decent tempo in this, with
Ori On Fire (11) and Safe Landing (9) to both take it up.
The form lines are vast, with each runner coming via their local qualifying event and the additional "wildcard" race.
Happy to have
Noble Boy (5) on top and I expect him to be back to his devastating best, which was seen in the Warwick Farm win three starts back.
Ori On Fire (11) gets plenty of favours from out in front and if the pressure slackened through the mid stages, he is one that can hang on for a long way.
Have to respect the Mathew Dunn stable whenever they have one in town and
La Scopa (12) looks very smart following the Grafton Qualifier win.
Best of the rest is
Safe Landing (9) who will race close to speed and with any cheap mid race sectionals, keep on kicking.
Best Racing Tips
1 st Noble Boy
2 nd Ori On Fire
3 rd La Scopa
4 th Safe Landing

Race 10 PJ Bell Stakes (Group 3 3yo Fillies SW+P) 1200m
The speed looks only moderate here.
Those drawn out are likley to be happy staying out there for the journey, in what may be the preferred going at this stage of the day.
Mizzy (8) has been racing in stronger grade and will appreciate the class drop from Group 1 grade last start, when 4 of 20 in the Coolmore Classic. Clear on top pick.
Into the Abyss (7) is ridiculous odds at $26 and did show enough last prep to suggest she is very good. She can improve dramatically from the first up effort in the Birthday Card.
Can't leave out the talented
Spanish Whisper (5). She arrives following a Group 2 win in the Kewney at Flemington, where she did it tough out wide and was still too strong late.
The Waller factor is always in play and he has
Madam Rouge (6) entered here.
She can be right with the leading division throughout and will go very close.
