The Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival draws to a close this Wednesday afternoon with Launceston Cup Day.
The exciting ten-race program is due to get underway at 12.55 pm AEDT.
Hobart Cup winner Double You Tee will attempt to win the $100,000 Cups Double Bonus in the Group 3 Launceston Cup over 2400m (Race 8). He meets a similar field except for the Waterhouse/Bott trained Runaway, and the progressive Trinder trained four-year-old gelding Supalopo.
Launceston Cup Day also features the return of four-year-old mare Still A Star. She will begin her All-Star Mile preparation in the $150,000 Group 3 Vamos Stakes.
Also headlining the day is the $100,000 Listed Mowbray Stakes. Mandela Effect will attempt to go back-to-back in this race when he takes on Thomas Lyons Stakes winner Newhart and Tasmanian Guineas winner Swoop Dog.
The track is currently rated a Soft 5, with a forecast of fine weather throughout the program.
The rail is out 4m for the entire circuit and at this set-up, the track should play fair.
Best bets from Jacob Beavis
Launceston Race 7 Tip #2 Newhart $2.15
The Leanne Gaffney trained five-year-old gelding is shooting for three wins in-a-row in the Listed Mowbray Stakes, and I’m backing him to do so.
He is coming into this off the back of a dominant 3.75 length win in the 1400m Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes on Hobart Cup Day, where he beat Group One mare Mystic Journey.
Two starts ago, he went back-to-back in the 1880m Devonport Cup.
The ultra-consistent gelding has only missed the quinella twice in his 14 career starts, and jockey Craig Newitt has a solid partnership with the horse (12:6-4-0).
From barrier 1, look for Newitt to settle him midfield before telling him to go at the top of the straight, giving him every possible chance to run away with the win.
Launceston Race 8 Tip #1 Double You Tee $3.30
I’m sticking with the Patrick Payne trained six-year-old gelding to win the 2021 Launceston Cup and $100,000 Cups Bonus.
He was given an outstanding ride by Jye McNeil for a 1.5 length win in the 2400m Hobart Cup, his first win for 470 days.
The consistent gelding will now have to carry an extra 4.5kg, but Patrick Payne won this race last year with top weight Home By Midnight.
He has finished top 3 in 11 of his last 18 races, so I have no doubt he will be there in the finish.
From barrier 10, watch for McNeil to take him back as per his usual racing style before making a move at the 800 metre mark to storm home over the top.
