Best horse racing tips today: Gosford 26/02/20

Midweek NSW racing heads to Gosford on Wednesday, where a competitive seven race card is lined up for punters.

The track is currently rated a Soft 6 but with clear skies and hot days ahead in Sydney, I expect a track upgrade to a Soft 5-Good 4 come Wednesday.

The rail is out 3m the entire circuit. Gosford generally plays fair in the straight but with the tight turn into the short 250m run home, it’s always an advantage to be on-pace. There is nothing to suggest anything different will play out on Wednesday.

Gosford Race 1 Tip #2 Tombstone $1.90

This three-year-old Freedman trained gelding steps out in trip here and looks to have been placed perfectly to notch up his second-career-win.

Second-up he drew nine of nine over the 1600m at Warwick Farm. After jockey Brenton Avdulla was forced to drag Tombstone to the rear, he savaged the line and reeled in the fastest last 600m sectional (34.90).

Last start, he bumped into potential VRC Oaks filly Colette, who blew the field away by over 6-lengths. The form out of that race has stood up, with three subsequent winners including Into the Oblivion, who smashed his rivals at Taree on Sunday.

Avdulla retakes the ride here and at the set weights, this gelding looks primed for a big showing. He’s drawn well in barrier three, but will sit back and likely be last of the small five horse field.

All four of his competitors have led in the past, but I’m expecting Power To Pay to take up the running with the 4kg claiming apprentice on board.

The minor concerns are the race shape (hopefully they don’t sit and sprint) and whether Tombstone can handle Gosford’s tight turn and short straight. 

He looks a class above and should be beating these, before progressing to bigger targets throughout his prep. 

 

Gosford Race 4 Tip #2 Our Girl Sniti $2.60

This three-year-old filly will appreciate the drop back to a provincial maiden, after contesting some very hot races in recent preparations.

In her two-year-old days, she raced against proven black type horses Wayupinsthesky, Libertini and Akari.

At her first race as a three-year-old, she competed in a hot maiden against recent Group Two winner Standout where she finished third. She was then thrown into the deep-end, competing in the Group 1 Flight Stakes against Funstar, Probabeel and Libertini.

From barrier three, she draws to do no work for this hit-out and should settle just behind the speed. She may need some luck on straightening, however you can expect Robbie Dolan to give her every chance.

If she can handle the 5kg rise in the weights, then she's the one they have to beat!
