Ascot Tips: Kingston Town Classic 2018

Tagged: Ascot

Group 1 finale in the West

Distance 1800m
Grade Group 1
Track Rating Good 4
Prizemoney $1,000,000
Class WFA 3yo and Up
2017 winner Fanatic ($4)

Kingston Town Classic day will bring a very successful Perth carnival to a close, which has seen a number of outstanding performances from both local and interstate raiders at Group 1 level.

The market appears to have overreacted to the local hopes here. Although two in particular must be considered leading chances, they both look well found and under the odds.

I am with a horse who raced well all throughout the Melbourne Spring Carnival. He's based in Victoria now having come from WA, and looks set to have a sweet return home.

Race Track Ascot Track Traits

Ascot is currently rated a Good 4 with the rail out 6m the entire circuit and fine conditions expected for Saturday's racing.

The Ascot surface typically plays fair with both on and off speed at no disadvantage. However as always, a close watch is advised for any perceived fast lanes.

Racing Market Movers Market Movers

The early move in betting has been for Galaxy Star who is $5.00 into $4.40, whilst all other runners remain steady.

Horse Racing Key Runners

#1 Trap For Fools $7.50

Pulled their pants down in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington when he led, dictated and just held on.

Back in distance suits here and if they let him get away with cheap sectionals out in front again, he is sure to be in the finish.

The wide barrier (gate 10) isn't a concern as he'll find the lead easily and has the quality to hang on. Must go on top.

#2 Material Man $8

Local hope who warrants a close watch following his impressive last start 3 of 15 in the Group 1 Railway Stakes at this track.

He was only beaten by 1.8 lengths on that occasion, however he received favours throughout the run after being tucked in behind the leaders and then angling off in the straight.

Would need everything to go his way here and appears to be a shade under the odds at the current $8 on offer. No.

#4 Gatting $12

Another who was close up in the Railway Stakes when finishing 2 of 15 behind the smart Galaxy Star.

He got back to midfield along the rail on that occasion, before extricating and coming with a good run.

The extra distance here suits and he could get out to silly odds, considering the investment expected to follow his higher profile rivals. Can win.

#11 Holy Snow $17

Melbourne raider who brings solid East Coast form.

He was beaten narrowly into second place last start by the smart Fifty Stars at Sandown in Group 3 grade.

Three starts back, he took on Group 1 level in the Sir Rupert Clarke when well beaten. This shows the high regard the stable hold him in however and they are not travelling the long distance to Perth for fun.

Weir could easily pull off another coup with this runner. Watch betting late.

#12 Galaxy Star $5 > $4.60

Was simply breathtaking when winning the Group 1 Railway last start after getting well back in what looked to be an impossible winning position.

She is ultra high class and you can expect the extra distance here to suit.

No doubt she's smart, however her regular jockey has jumped off, opting to ride Arcadia Queen.

Very well exposed and found in betting following her Railway heroics, however must be considered a leading hope.

#15 Arcadia Queen $2.60

Is the "chosen one" by WA's leading hoop William Pike, whose judgment must be respected here.

Comes via a different route to most of these as the only 3yo in the field, where last start she was very dominant in winning the WA Guineas by 3 lengths.

Just feel the market could be getting a bit too excited here, about a 3yo on debut at Group 1 level who has to take on the seasoned older horses.

The current odds of $2.60 look poison and although she must be considered a leading fancy, I prefer to bet around her at the price.

Of The Others

#10 Iconoclasm worked well during the week and was reported to shade Trap For Fools in the track gallop.

It is always very difficult to get any guide at trackwork, however the whispers are that he has come on very well from the midfield finish (8 of 15) in the Railway last start.

Has the Weir polish and can surprise at odds.
