Cup Day Crunches

Two winners was all we needed to turn a profit on Saturday.

Kemalpasa burned down the Flemington straight to salute at $5.50 on Derby Day, before Colette flew home in the Golden Eagle at Rosehill to win at $6.00 after opening up in early markets at $10.

Early shoppers who snapped up the odds of our eight selections at the time of publication pulled in 44% Profit on Turnover, kicking off their Melbourne Cup carnival in style.

The professional punters are at it again and have attacked early Cup day betting markets, targeting a number of key runners listed below.

At Flemington, a high-profile ownership group expect results in the opening race, whilst at Randwick a “sectional star” has been well found.

Flemington Tips

Marine One

Has a very high-profile ownership group, who would expect nothing less than a win here.

This means the trainer would only be entering the horse if it was ready, and a high chance of winning.

Expect him to simply brain them. Yes.

Yonkers

Won well at Caulfield last start, after running home strongly from a midfield position at good odds ($10).

He is out to 2800m for the first time and it will be a new pain barrier, however he is now rock hard fit and looks well suited over more ground.

Trust the shrewd Waller yard have to him cherry ripe for this.

Groundswell

Could not have been more impressive winning at Moonee Valley last start, when he led and gave a strong kick late.

He draws out in barrier 15 here, and I expect them to ride midfield three-wide with cover on this occasion.

Coming from a midfield position in the moving line may be the ideal pattern on Cup day, therefore he appears suited.

Purple Sector

Simply dominated at Randwick last time out when racing close to speed and charged away at the end.

This is a rise in grade up to Listed class, however he was very good last start and certainly deserves his place.

The booking of leading rider Craig Williams adds plenty of confidence.

Prince Invincible

Out to a more suitable distance of 1400m appears the key factor here, as he has chased hard in previous starts over shorter trips.

From the wide draw (barrier 11), expect them to race midfield in the moving line with plenty of clean air to run on.

He has much more race experience than most of this field, which should hold an advantage.

Great News

Deserves his chance in city grade after working through the provincial grades nicely, with wins at his past 3 starts.

He maps well from gate 1 and can suck up in behind the leading pair for the entire trip.

The Tommy Sherry claim of 3kg also makes him very hard to beat.

Gone Bye

I suspect that the strong support has arrived for this horse due to the outstanding late sectionals he recorded here on the Kensington surface last start (fastest last 200m of the day).

He possesses good tactical speed and is likely to lead this field.

Given any cheap mid race sectionals, he should be winning. Yes.

Belluci Babe

Is shooting for a hat-trick following impressive wins on the Kensington and at Hawkesbury.

She is clearly talented and has a strong SP profile after starting favourite at all 4 career starts, 3 of which resulted in victories.

If she finds cover in the moving line, expect her to simply win.
