Kurt Burns' best plays for Wagga

We're off to the NSW Riverina region on Friday, where Wagga plays host to a strong 8-race card.

The track is currently rated a Soft 6 but with an afternoon thunderstorm forecast, there is a chance of a downgrade late in the day.

The rail is in the true position for the first time in almost three-months.

Expect the first few races to favour those horses close to the rail and in the fresh going.

Wagga Race 1 Tip #1 Dambulla $2.60

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace saddle up this five-year-old gelding by Fastnet Rock, who looks the one to beat.

The rain affected track is ideal for this guy, who thrives on the Soft going (6:2-1-0).

The booking of gun jockey Blaike Mcdougall is a huge push and suggests the stable are keen on his chances.

There aren't many 3200m races these days, so it makes it hard to really know which horses can handle the trip.

But on form, this guy should be too good for them.

Wagga Race 2 Tip #1 Axion $5.50

Canberra trainer Garry Kirkup prepares the eight-year-old gelding Axion for this clash.

He's a seasoned campaigner and has been great for connections, with 62 starts for 9 wins and 18 placings.

Last time out, the 2000m BM60 was just a stretch too far for his old legs. Dropping back to the mile here in weaker company is the key to his chances.

He's another who enjoys a rain affected track and with a Soft record of 16:4-3-4, you'd expect him to relish the track today.

My only concern is the three runs at Wagga for no placings, but they have been much harder fields then this.

He ticks plenty of boxes and I don't expect the $5.50 to still be there come race start.
