The 2014 Mackinnon Stakes is a Group 1 race run over 2,000 metres and held on one of the biggest days on the Australian racing calendar, Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse. In 2014 the weight for age race will be run on November 1st with prize money of $1 Million in addition to a $2,500 trophy. Typically this race attracts horses who have a high enough ranking to avoid the ballot for the Melbourne Cup, run three days later. The alternative for horses targeting a Melbourne Cup start is the Lexus Stakes run over 2,500 metres on the same day.
The last horse to win Mackinnon Stakes - Melbourne Cup double was Rogan Josh in 1999. Fifteen other horses have achieved the double which is a significant indicator of the relevance that the Mackinnon Stakes holds as a form guide for the Cup.
After being unplaced in the Cox Plate a week earlier Side Glance won the race in 2013 paying $12. The Clarry Conners trained Dear Demi ran second three-quarters of a length behind, followed by the Chris Waller trained Moriarty half-a-head away in third place. Of the three Dear Demi was the only starter in the Melbourne Cup three days later and finished a disappointing 19th place 15 lengths behind Fiorente.
