The 2014 Herbert Power Stakes, which up to 2009 was known as the Winning Edge Presentation Stakes, is a Group 2 Quality Handicap race run at Caulfield Racecourse over 2,400 metres. As one of the qualifying races for the prestigious Melbourne Cup, the race draws allot of attention from the racing public as it gives punters an early opportunity to see some of the main contenders for the Melbourne Cup in action. The 2014 Herbert Power Stakes will be run on October 11th with prize money of $200,000 on offer.
Last year's winner was Sea Moon trained by Robert Hickmott who was unplaced in the Makybe Diva Stakes and the Underwood Stakes in September and then got beaten by a nose in the Bart Cummings Stakes on October 5th where he started favourite in the betting. His win in the Herbert Power a few weeks later was his first for his new owner Lloyd Williams.
Form from the 2013 Herbert Power Stakes was a useful guide for the 2013 Melbourne Cup run over three weeks later. 2013 winner Sea Moon finished midfield in the Cup in 13th place, 9.5 lengths behind the winner. Third placed Simenon however, ran fourth just 2.5 lengths from the winner Fiorente. Second placed Oasis Bloom did not start in the Cup.
The last winner of the Herbert Power Stakes to also win the Melbourne Cup in the same year was Rogan Josh back in 1999. There were five other horses who have achieved the same feat in the history of running both races including Arwon in 1978, Van Der Hum in 1976 and Gala Supreme in 1973.
