Best bets for midweek racing

Free racing tips from Michael Gannon

With 25mm of rain forecast in the lead-up to Wednesday, the Warwick Farm track looks set to be rated in the heavy range.

A rain affected track with the rail back in the true position is likely to favour horses who can sit on-pace with cover and find the best going in the straight. The sweet spot in the run for home should be about 4-5 lanes off the rail.

Warwick Farm Race 3 Tip #3 Entente $4.20

The son of Dundeel was well backed in early markets on debut, before starting a $3.20 favourite.

Jumping only fairly, he sat beyond mid-field in the run before peeling away to charge home and finish 2 lengths off the winner.

He'll take a stack of benefit from that run and there is no doubt he'll be better suited over a testing 1400m.

Connections must have a high opinion of this colt. He holds a nomination for this year's Melbourne Cup and you'd expect him to improve at each run this prep.

The blinkers go on for the first-time, which will likely switch this galloper on and see him settle more forward this time around.

With natural progression and the key gear change, look for this colt to improve significantly and prove too strong for his rivals.

The Cranbourne track is rated a Heavy 8 with the rail out 9m the entire circuit.

Cranbourne Race 1 Tip #4 Lord Markel $12.00 each-way

This three-year-old colt by Hallowed Crown impressed me when trialling a month ago at Cranbourne.

He sat mid-field early in that run, before Oliver let him gallop under his own steam which saw him cruise through the field and join in with the talented Barcali after the line.

That trial was run in good time and Barcali then went on to finish fourth in a Group Three. In contrast, this guy contests a maiden at his home track.

He got through the heavy surface with no problems in that impressive trial and I expect him to have little trouble handling it under race conditions.

In a big field of 12, look for jockey Brett Prebble to take a sit mid-field. From there, look for him to make his move as they enter the straight and let down with a big sprint late.

The colt represents great value and well worth an each-way play.
