The McEwen stakes at Moonee Valley is my pick of the five Group 2 races this Saturday. Just the seven runners with at least six of them having a genuine chance of winning the race. Top sprinting talent going around the 1000m at the Valley always makes for an exciting race.
Supido is the only one they have come for early, into $7.5 after opening at $9 earlier in the week.
#7 Houtzen 2.35 -> 2.60
Magic Millions winner. Only career loss came in the Golden Slipper on a heavy 10. Trialled well before travelling to Melbourne. Early speed should work well for her. Hard to beat.
#1 Russian Revolution 3.50 -> 3.60
Can't fault his two career first-up runs winning both against the likes of Astern and Redzel. Didn't shine in his two runs at weight-for-age. Gets his chance here.
#5 Heatherly 5 -> 6
Led in a fast run race when resuming and only just missed. Quality mare who will be fitter here. Top contender.
#3 Supido 9 -> 7.50
Executed nicely when resuming in the G3 Monash. Not far away from G1 champion English second-up last prep. Contender.
#2 Hellbent 8 -> 8
Has raced well at this level . Excellent fresh record with three wins from five starts. Finished a close third to Tivaci first-up last preparation. Chance
#4 Missrock 10 -> 9.50
Carried on her good form when resuming last start, grabbing Heatherly on the line to win the Carlyon. Finished her last campaign in style running a close second to gun horse Vega Magic. Winner at her only start at this track and distance. One of the chances.
#6 Unique Lovely 91 -> 126
Will find this lot a bit tough.
1st Heatherly - class mare who raced well first-up. Expecting her to be better than that again with the run under her belt.
