Best plays at Newcastle

Racing heads to Newcastle on Tuesday, in what looks to be a cracking seven race card.

The track is currently rated a Good 4, however there has been plenty of rain about over the last few days.

Given the excellent drainage on the Newcastle track however, it's unlikely we'll be playing on anything worse than a Soft 5.

The rail is out 10m, which gives those runners in the front half of the field a slight advantage on one of NSW's fairest tracks.

From the stewards

The horse which has sparked my interest in the pre-steward's report is Whispered, who will feature in Race 7.

Last start at this track, the Lonhro gelding did well to fight out the finish after settling off the pace and racing wide without cover throughout.

With a better draw and little speed engaged in this race, expect him to sit more forward and have a much-improved run.

Jockey to follow

Of the jockeys engaged today, Andrew Gibbons has the best stats on the board.

'Gibbo' has had 126 rides at this track in the past 12 months, winning 24 at a strike rate of 19%.

Gibbons best ride comes in Race 4 No.9 Meadowland.

The Pierro filly heads into this off the back of a nice run at Hawkesbury.

In that hit-out she sat off a moderate pace which showed in the finish, as she was the only one to make any ground on the leaders.

She ran impressive sectionals of 34.93 in the final 600m, which included a quick 11.38 from the 400m to 200m mark.

Although it took her five starts to taste victory, four of those races have been around this distance and she finished in the placings on three of those occasions.

She doesn't mind a bit of sting out of the track and despite stepping-up in distance, she gets a drop of 2.5kg with the addition of gun apprentice Tom Sherry.

The filly has drawn wide in this small field, so she has the option of dropping back or striding forward. She has a better turn-of-foot than most of her rivals, so either way she should be fighting out the finish.

She is rock-hard-fit and will appreciate any rain if it turns up.

I have this filly marked a $2.50 chance in this race and I expect her to be too good for these.
