The Sydney Cup continues to gain traction, with the Group 1 status and lucrative prize purse once again attracting the nation's top staying talent.

Most of these runners are on a well worn path and come out of the key lead up races, including the Group 1 Tancred and Group 2 Chairman's Stakes.

I am with one who dictated to win the Manion Cup and I suspect the Team Williams ownership group love winning this particular race.

They will have him cherry ripe.

The favourite appears a shade under the odds at $3.40 and you can expect a market drift as we approach start time.

 Racing Market Movers

Race favourite Dubhe has been a drifter in early betting, easing from the opening $3.00 quote to now trade at $3.40.

All other runners remain steady. 

 

 Key Runners

#4 Red Cardinal $13 

Has performed well all prep (won 2 of 3) before slightly disappointing at his latest in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes, where he finished 7 of 12.

Happy to forgive the last start effort and if he gets the right run around midfield, look for him to be storming home late.

Drops well down in the weights from WFA conditions (59kg) and could be much more dynamic back to 54kg. Leading hope.

 

#5 Big Duke $9.50  

Consistent stayer who appears to appreciate the longer journeys.

He was good last start in the Tancred, when running second behind a horse that could be an absolute superstar in Avilius.

Will get well back to near last and hope they pour on the pressure.

If he gets the race run to suit, he is sure to fight out the finish. Yes.

#8 Yogi $11 

Another get back type who needs the pressure red hot up front.

He looks to be going better than ever this time in, following the ultra impressive win first-up at Caulfield. He was then strong last start in the Tancred when finishing fifth.

Just needs the tempo to be solid. Top hope.

 

#10 Dubhe $3.00 > $3.40

Master trainer Charlie Appleby arrives with this Godolphin fancy and punters believe he is the one, installing him a $3.40 favourite.

The UK and Dubai form is excellent and they have us covered more often than not in the staying ranks.

I just feel the market has overreacted a little here and he can only drift as we approach start time.

Goes in the numbers, however not top pick.       

 

#11 Midterm $8

Is the likely leader and should burn out and attempt to take control.

Gun rider Jamie Kah gave them all a masterclass on him last start at Rosehill to win the Manion Cup, when he led, dictated and kicked away.

No reason why she can't repeat that here and this horse must go on top. Yes.

 

#14 Gallic Chieftain $16

Was a huge run here last start to win a key lead up race, the Chairman's Stakes.

He came with a long sustained run on that occasion and that could be the profile to be winning this.

If the speed goes on he will be in the finish. Yes.

#15 Rondinella $17

Has had a huge boom on her since arriving from NZ and did run well in the Group 1 Tancred last start to place 3 of 12.

She is a gun kiwi raider and must be respected, now up to the true staying journey.

Watch the market late and bet accordingly. 

 

#16 Shraaoh $11 

Has been racing well without winning.

At his latest he ran the most gallant of second placings in the Chairman's Stakes here behind Gallic Chieftain, after looking the winner.

This race could well be his turn and you can expect him to follow the usual pattern of midfield with cover, before grinding home late.

Must include in everything. Yes
